Data Access Studio for Technical Staff

As technical staff you might be interested in the way Data Access Studio integrates with the JD Edwards security and how it impacts performance.

The answers to these questions you will find on this page or on the FAQ page.   If the answer to your is not here, please send us an email with your question and you will receive a prompt reply.

Develop-to-Publish
With Data Access Studio a user simply designs and publishes his reports without having to ask the IT-staff to deploy the reports through a JD Edwards Deployment cycle. With Data Access Studio it is a simple 3-step process performed by the user:

Design - Save - Publish

Performance
To minimize performance impact, Data Access Studio has several features that let you control and optimize performance:

Index support - visualize the available indexes and use them in your queries.

Audit trail - see who runs what report, if the report is using an index and how long it took for several steps to execute.  You can then go back and start using an index for performance optimization.

The progress bar shows percentage of table loaded. It also allows you to cancel your query at any time without having to exit/stop Data Access Studio.

You load data without tying up the user interface.

Users can hide unnecessary table columns.  Data Access Studio will only bring back results for the visible columns. This results in reduced network traffic, reduced database utilization, and increased speed.

Data Access Studio consumes no JD Edwards enterprise server resources.
All calculations are performed on the machine that runs the DAS Client, with this Data Access Studio minimizes the performance impact on shared resources as much as possible.
On the Fat Client, all calculations are performed on the user's workstation.
On the LAN or Web mode, calculations are performed on the users's workstation.
On Citrix, all calculations are performed on the Citrix server.

Security
Data Access Studio connects to your JD Edwards system using the JDE middleware.  This means that Data Access Studio will work with whatever OneWorld/EnterpriseOne data sources you have set up.
Furthermore, in using the JDE middleware, Data Access Studio enforces the JD Edwards data access security:

Row, Column and Table Trigger security:
If a user is unauthorized to view an EnterpriseOne column, Data Access Studio simply does not load data for that column. It also prevents the user from showing that column.
If a user is unauthorized to view an EnterpriseOne row (based on E1 row security), Data Access Studio does not return that row to the grid.

Application Level security:
Data Access Studio provides a security system that allows the administrator to secure Data Access Studio functionality from specific E1 users or groups.

On top of your JD Edwards security settings, Data Access Studio allows you to secure which tables a user or group may open. The security system is based on a hierarchical model that simplifies security maintenance.

If you add the fact that Data Access Studio is Read-Only you can safely install and "forget" about Data Access Studio..... until you have to execute a typical 10-minute upgrade when new releases become available.
